The Single Girl’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

You and Your… Self Esteem

It happens every year. Right after the new year’s confetti has been swept away you go into your favorite store and upon entry you’re bombarded with a sea of pink, red and white hearts and decorations; the trappings of Valentine’s Day. Despite what Hollyweird, Cosmo or Hallmark tells you being single on Valentine’s day doesn’t have to suck. Here are some things to do to celebrate the holiday with your sanity and self-esteem intact. No Kleenex required.

Take it old school. Remember those paper valentines we’d give our classmates in elementary school? That was before we had really grasped the concept of singling people out. You gave everyone in your class a cheesy paper valentine. There’s no reason why you can’t give your loved ones little cards of appreciation. Take it back and buy a box of kiddy valentines (for the nostalgic) or if you’re creative with a little time on your hands you can make your own from construction paper, old magazines, glue and markers.

Do something silly. Get together with friends and do something fun. If you have a little extra cash you can go out to a karaoke bar or an arcade like Dave & Buster’s. No one can take themselves too seriously while their belting out Abba’s greatest hits or playing Street Fighter. If you’re low on funds why not have a Wii party (I suggest Wii Sports, Just Dance 2 or The Michael Jackson Experience), a traditional board game party or watch a few funny movies or TV shows on DVD. Make sure there are plenty of snacks on hand and a camera ready to catch all the silliness on tape! Whatever you do have a great time and laugh till your sides hurt.

Have a spa day. You can do this alone or with the girls but take a few hours to really pamper yourself. Take a long luxurious bubble bath and settle in with a good book or a great playlist on your iPod and don’t forget the candles! I’m a huge advocate of DIY beauty and since it is Valentine’s day weekend I’d stay away from the hair and nail salons because it’s going to be a madhouse. Take the time to give yourself a manicure or a facial and try a different hairstyle or a new makeup look. Focusing on yourself is a great way to way to relax and boost your confidence. When you look good, you feel good.

Count your blessings. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have shift your attention to the things you have been blessed with. Get a fresh sheet of paper and go to town. You’ll be amazed and how a little gratitude can change your outlook. Too many times we’re quick to count our troubles instead of our blessings so take stock of the great things in your life and be prepared to feel happier almost instantly. It doesn’t cost anything to give thanks so get to giving and have a happy Valentines Day!
